Grant Lewis of Licking, Mo. was the 26-year-old brother of SMS cheerleader/dancer Ashton Lewis.  Grant died on January 17th, 2006 at his home from complications related to AIDS.  Grant was a hemophiliac and received a blood transfusion at age 3 that was tainted by infected blood.  Grant contracted HIV from a blood transfusion that was supposed to save his life.
Grant and his family did not find out until age 11 that he had contracted the disease.  Grant and his mother, Linda, became nationally known activists working for a safer blood supply.  Grant's life meant and taught so much to those who knew him.  Let his passing bring new life to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Long time?

Hi, girls!  It seems like forever since I have posted on here.  Been way too busy for one woman.

I thought we had decided to go ahead and have practice on Thursday even though I was at the pageant rehearsal?  Kathy Grindstaff came over and nobody showed up.

I judged the Cheersport regional in St Louis on Sunday and it gave me a very good look at other teams and our division.  I was amazed to see that St. Louis Extreme has a 2nd grader on their best team.  If they can do it, we can too.

I really like the cheer section we are adding.  I think it is going to be great when it is finished.  Can't wait for all of you to get your backhandsprings.  Keep doing those pushups and situps.  Handstands help too.

See you at practice on Thursday.

New Practice Schedule

Hey, girls!  I thought Sunday was our most fun practice in awhile.  It was nice to hear laughter again,  I was also impressed with the tumbling.  Keep working hard and we will get it.  Ashton, I hope your ear is okay.  That had to hurt.  You handled it very well and I was impressed with your maturity about it.

That new stunt is going to be really awesome.  It is going to take a lot of work, but it is very worth it.  Jamie and Lauren, remember that we are all here for you.  The whole team wants to see you learn and get confident.  Jamie, those libs were very good!  You did a good job.  Lauren, I know you are trying so hard.  You will get there.  It just takes time.  Flying is not as easy as it looks.

Remember our new practice schedule.  No more Monday nights.  Thursday nights 7-9 and Sunday afternoons from 2-5.  If we get everybody there, Sundays are going to be great.  I had fun at practice and hope you did too.  Keep recruiting and I will see you Thursday.  Go SMS!

Miss Merry Christmas

Hello, girls!  It's time for Christmas already!  We are hosting the Miss Merry Christmas pageant this year.  There will be a meeting today at 4:00 p.m. at Pizza Express Restaurant in Houston for Pageant info and signup.  I would love for all of our girls to sign up.  Please call and encourage your friends to sign-up.  I am using this as a fundraiser to fund the scholarship that we give out at the end of the year and a few other things.  Cost is $25.00 to register.  There are 3 titles given per age division and lots of fun stuff.  My goal is to make this the best Holiday pageant ever.  It used to only be open to Houston girls, but I am opening it up to all of Texas County.  Also, we have divisions from ages 3-18.  Help me recruit and make this the best Miss Merry Christmas ever!

Good job tonight!

I thought several of you did really well tonight.  I was really proud of Jerica for doing a RBT.  Keep trying and it will be awesome!  Also, Jerica and Stephanie were totally nailing those front handsprings.  Those are really hard to do and you two made it look easy.  Whitney did an awesome job on standing backhandsprings.  Jumps looked good as usual.  Man Stunts are going to be the coolest thing this year.  I was so impressed with the bases and the flyers.  Lauren, I know you are new to the team , but you are learning so quickly and your basket tosses were very good for a beginner.  Also, I love how determined you are to make your tumbling better. Jessi, get more flexible and have more faith in yourself and see how high you fly.  Alicia, thanks for being my go-to girl and for letting your boyfriend join the team.  Bobby, this must be very weird for you, but stick with it and you will see how cool it can be.  I am really proud of you.  You may take some stuff at school, but challenge them to try it and see how easy it is.  It takes real strength to do what we do.  Tameka, thank you for bringing new people.  That helps make our team stronger.  Ashton and Katelyn, great job basing whatever I threw your way.  That is what teamwork is all about.

Good practice.  Keep it up.

Janissa Wins Ms. Greene County PreTeen 2006!!!

Hey Ladies!  I just wanted to let you know that one of your teammates has been named Miss Greene County PreTeen 2006!  On Saturday, Janissa competed against 20 girls to win the title.  I was so proud of her and she was so excited.  She looked awesome in every category and totally nailed the interview.  Way to go, Janissa!  I will post a picture as soon as I can.

Ashton and Stephanie also competed in this pageant.  They both faced very stiff competition.  Ashton won the Miss Photogenic.  I think she would have placed in the Junior Teen division, but they had her in the Teen division and she was against some very tall 16 year-olds.   I believe that Ashton gave the best interview answer out of her division.  Ashton, don't give up.  This was a poorly run pageant and I think you did great.  In my opinion, Stephanie was the prettiest girl in her division.  She was also the youngest.  Keep trying, Steph.  The crowd loved you.

See you at practice!!

Keep it up!

Hey girls!  I have been busy lately and haven't had much time to write, but I wanted to drop a few lines and give compliments out.  First, at tumbling class on Tuesday night, Jerica and Ellie and Janissa did their standing backhandsprings!  Jerica and Gilda are also working on roundoff back tucks!  That brings us to four back tucks!  More of you are capable.  We just need to get more girls at tumbling practice.  By my count, Jessi, Janissa,  Jerica, Gilda, Ellie and Stephanie are able to do SBH's.  Katy, Whitney and Ashton are right behind them.  Tameka, Katelyn and Alicia are capable we just need to get more practice in.  With hard work we can get all of the team tumbling!  That should be a strong goal!  Keep working girls.  We will get there.

Katelyn did the dance the other night and then she did some of the original moves.  She looked so good that I wanted to try something.  I think I have added back in one of the original moves and made it stronger.  I really like it.  Monday night we will try it.

Stunt Group has had two practices and even though Ashton and Tameka are new (and sore)  I think they are going to be awesome with more practice.  I am excited to see how they progress.  Ellie is working on her individual routine.  That girl can jump!!  I am also glad to see how she is improving on her flexibility.

You all know that we need more girls.  Please try to recruit other girls, especially bases or tumblers.  Every person we get or get back (Ashlee?) makes us stronger.

Also, I have had several people ask me about a dance team.  If you are interested let me know.  It doesn't have to be just SMS girls either.  Gotta go!

Have a good weekend and I will see you Monday.

Miss Texas County

Congratulations to all of you who competed.  I am very proud of all of you.  You looked gorgeous in your gowns.  I know some of you are disappointed with how you did or didn't place, but keep your chins up.  The results don't change who you are.  If you didn't do as well as you wanted to, learn from the experience and keep trying.

Once again, Show Me Spirit girls made a great showing, taking several titles.  16 SMS girls were in the pageants.  There was a total of 56 girls from Texas County competing in the different divisions.  12 SMS girls placed out of 23 places given.  That means that over half of the placings in the pageant were girls from SMS.
